Soul Nebula, up close & personal



In this blog post of mine, I'm showing a collection of the Soul Nebula images. Some of them are shot in previous years and some at this Autumn season. All images are reprocessed since I have now a better technique.

In this wide field image, the Soul Nebula is shown with its neighbor, the Heart nebula.
Image is shot with the Canon EF 200mm f1.8 lens, Baader narrowband filters and the QHY9 cooled astronomical camera.

Soul Nebula, (Sh2-199, LBN 667) is an emission nebula in constellation Cassiopeia. IC 1848 is a cluster inside Soul Nebula. Distance is about 7.500 light years. This complex is a Eastern neighbor of IC 1805, the "Heart Nebula" and they are often mentioned together as Heart and Soul.

soul Nebula, an experimental 3D-study

IC 1848, the "Soul Nebula", reprocessed





Since my processing technique gets better and the time of year doesn't give any support, I have reprocessed some older images. There is now star colors added and other processing is tweaked too.

Image is in HST-palette, (HST=Hubble Space Telescope)
from the emission of ionized elements, R=Sulfur, G=Hydrogen and B=Oxygen.
Star colors are mixed from the NB channels, Red=H-a, G=O-III and B= 85%O-III + 15%H-a.

This image is taken with a Tokina AT-X 300mm F2.8 camera lens.
Soul Nebula (Sh2-199, LBN667) is an emission nebula in Cassiopeia at distance of about 7500 light years.
This complex is the eastern neighbor of IC1805 (Heart Nebula) and the two are often mentioned together as the "Heart and Soul".

Soul Nebula, IC 1848, as a two frame mosaic



This image is originally shot this Autumn between 27 and 29.10. I haven't publish it before, since I have had so much material to share. The new imaging system gives me a nice field of view, with a high resolution. 
63x63 arc minutes at a scale of 0,95 arc seconds/pixel. That's over a square degree of sky.

Nebula in visual spectrum

Red is a dominant color since the strongest emission line of hydrogen, H-alpha, emits red light. Bluish hues are from ionized oxygen, O-III

IC 1848, the "Soul Nebula"

It was clear last night for a while. I have shot lots of longer focal length images at last couple of winters.
This time I used a Tokina AT-x 300mm camera lens at full aperture, f2.8, coupled with a QHY9 astronomical camera. This lens delivers image with a spatial resolution of 3,83 arc seconds/pixel and the field of field is 
213' x 159' (3,55 x 2,65 degrees). There is now a QHY filter wheel attached, focusing is done by the FocuMax software and a DIY focusing mechanism for camera lenses. Image of it can be seen here:
I had lots of problem with this image. First of all, the CCD was not perfectly perpendicular to an optical axle,
I'll fix that tonight. Secondly my old Meade has some looseness in Ra mechanism, I think it's simply worn out, guiding was very jumpy due that.

This is a final version of IC 1848. I shot more H-alpha, 15 x 20min., since the first set was ruined by the orthogonality problem between the optical path and CCD. Now all stars are pinpoints at a whole field of view.

Soul Nebula detail, IC 1848



I was able to shoot through four nights at last week. Unfortunately three of those night was ruined by a bad seeing, FWHM around 7, and nearly invisible thin clouds ate out the weaker signals. However, I had enough good data for couple of new images, here is the first one, IC 1848.

Star colors are shot with a QHY8 color camera, Tokina 300mm f2.8 optics and the Baader UHCs filter.
The open cluster IC 1848 can be seen at upper right edge of the image. (Two bright stars surrounded by a group of dimmer stars.)

There are 14x20min H-alpha light collected for this image, color data is borrowed from my older wide field image of the Soul NebulaThis is the second time for my tandem camera system, Star colors are shot at the same time, as the closeup image, with the QHY8 color camera and the Baader UHCs-filter. This filter delivers real colors for the stars, even though it's kind of narrowband filter.

From the bottom of my Soul




New imaging project, IC 1848, the Soul Nebula. This season I have worked with a longer focal length instrument, my old Meade LX200 12". This image shows a detail from a much large Nebula complex.

Soul Nebula (Sharpless 2-199, LBN 667) is emission nebulae in Cassiopeia at a distance of 7500 light years. The object is more commonly called by the cluster designation IC1848.

This complex is the eastern neighbor of IC1805 (Heart Nebula) and the two are often mentioned together as the "Heart and Soul".

A mosaic
I have shot an other detail from this nebula complex back in 2009. This new and older detail are overlapping, so I was able to do a two frame mosaic out of them.
